TENUTA GREPPO

Entry of Villa Greppo
Ferruccio Biondi Santi launched the organic and rational management of the "Greppo" estate. His decision to graft the estate’s new vines with the Sangiovese Grosso clone he had selected was of fundamental importance.

Villa Greppo

The entire estate, which now occupies 47 hectares at Greppo and 105 at Pieri, encompasses an area of 25 hectares of vineyards cultivated with Sangiovese Grosso, five of which are home to very old vines (from 1930 to 1970), with eight hectares of old vines (1988/89), six hectares of recently planted vines (2000/2001) and six hectares of very new vines (2004 to 2006).
All the very fertile land is rejected, the preference being for marl, rich in heavy stone, exposed South, Southeast, East, Northeast and North.
The rest of the land is cultivated with olive groves, seed crops and woods.

The plantation arrangement in the very old vineyards is 3 m x 1.50, with 2,222 vines per hectare, while that of the vineyards planted at the end of the 80s is 2.60 m x 1.30 x 2 vines for every position, with 5,900 vines per hectare. Since the 90s, the plantation arrangement has been 2.60 m. x 85, with 4,500 vines per hectare.
The espalier cultivation system is used, with horizontal spurred cordon and 25/35,000 buds per hectare.
The vineyard culture operations are carried out with meticulous precision by highly specialised labour.
The two most important operations are the thinning of the grapes before veraison and the manual selection of the grapes at harvest time, with only the finest grapes being destined to the production of Brunello di Montalcino.
