An excellent and exceptional harvest. A very good growing season with a wet spring and a dry summer which led to a dry harvest season. The Riserva 1955 was chosen as the only Italian wine by the American wine magazine “The Wine Spectator” as one of the 12 best wines of the world of the 20th century.
The 1955 Riserva was produced exclusively with estate grown grapes sourced from the oldest vines with over 25 years of age. This wine antecedes the registration of the proprietary BBS11 Sangiovese Grosso clone (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which bears the name of the family. This clone was formally recognized in 1978.
The 1955 Riserva was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 4 years. It benefited from a long refinement in the bottle in the quiet and darkness of “La Storica”, the bottle library at Tenuta Greppo where all the historic vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva are scrupulously kept.
This vintage was topped up and the cork was changed for the first time in 1978, and again in 2000.
